Former Conservative Life Peers: Jeffrey Archer $8.69 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Jeffrey Howard Archer, Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare (born 15 April 1940) is an English author, actor, playwright and former politician. He was a Member of Parliament and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, and became a life peer in 1992. His political career, having suffered several controversies, ended after a conviction for perverting the course of justice and his subsequent imprisonment. He is married to Mary Archer, a scientist specialising in solar power. Jeffrey Howard Archer was born in the City of London Maternity Hospital. He was two weeks old when his family moved to the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, where he spent most of his early life. His father, William, was sixty-four when Archer was born. He died when Archer was fifteen. In 1951, he won a scholarship to Wellington School, in Somerset (not to be confused with the public school Wellington College, which is possible from the ambiguous biography in Archer’s earlier books). At this time his mother, Lola, contributed a column “Over the teacups” to the local press in Weston-super-Mare and wrote about the adventures of her son ‘Tuppence’; this caused Archer to be the victim of bullying while at Wellington School. After Archer left school passing O-levels in English Literature, Art, and History, he worked in a number of jobs, including training with the army and for the police. This lasted only for a few months, but he fared better as a Physical Education teacher; first at Vicar’s Hill, a Prep School in Hampshire, and later at the more prestigious independent school Dover College in Kent. As a teacher he was popular with pupils and reported by some to have had good motivational skills. He gained a place at Brasenose College, Oxford to study for a one-year dip… More: |

Make It In America: The Case for Re-Inventing the Economy $9.73 We used to make things in this country. We were the dazzling innovators, the undisputed world economic leaders, and with our manufacturing engine driving the process, we built a solid, high-achieving middle class and a thriving economy. Now, thanks to policies that are either indifferent to manufacturing or, in fact, downright hostile, we’re at the brink of losing it all. If you think this won’t affect you, guess again. In Make It in America: The Case for Re-Inventing the Economy, author Andrew Liveris presents a powerful case for how critically important domestic manufacturing is to the long-term health of the entire U.S. economy, and he issues a candid wake-up call to America to re-invent its manufacturing base before it’s too late.If anyone has street cred on this subject, it’s Andrew Liveris. Currently Chairman and CEO of The Dow Chemical Company, one of the world’s largest man-ufacturers and one of the most global corporations, he’s been on the global manufacturing stage for over thirty years. In this thought-provoking book, Liveris challenges conventional wisdom and, using vivid examples from around the globe, makes clear:Manufacturing matters—more than ever before. Not all sectors are created equal. Manufacturing can create jobs and wealth and growth to a degree that the service sector can’t match. The rest of the world now sees what America used to understand: the key to economic growth is taking something of lesser value and transforming it into something of greater value. That’s what manufacturing does. The Rust Belt, it turns out, isn’t so rusty. Twenty-first- century manufacturing means solar cells for your home, batteries for your hybrid car, the touch screen on your smart phone, and the e-ink in your Kindle. Manufacturing is the key driver of R&D, and the leading edge of innovation.Government’s got to get engaged. Liveris argues it’s a false choice to claim that you must be either pro-business or |

Following a less than electrifying Naval career and after being required to resign from the latest in a string of jobs, Dave awoke on his thirtieth birthday on a distant tropical beach, suffering from a hangover with a strange black substance soaking into the crotch of his shorts. Things would have to change, starting with the shorts. The unforeseen “re-direction” in his career threw Dave headfirst into the roller coasting, cut-throat, money driven world of the freelancer, where the next five years saw him transport everything from sex toys to sniper rifles through solar flares, thunderstorms, searing heat and blinding cold to every destination under the stars. |

Small Form Factor PCs $2.26 Small Form Factor PCs is the only book available that shows you how to build small form factor PCs — from kits and from scratch — that are more interesting and more personalized than what a full-sized PC can give you. Included in the book are projects for building personal video recorders, versatile wireless access points, digital audio jukeboxes, portable firewalls, and much more. This book shows you how to build eight different systems, from the shoebox-sized Shuttle system down to the stick-of-gum sized gumstix.Duane Wessels became interested in web caching in 1994 as a topic for his master’s thesis in telecommunications at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He worked with members of the Harvest research project to develop web caching software. After the departure of other members to industry jobs, he continued the software development under the name Squid. Another significant part of Duane’s research with the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research has been the operation of 6 to 8 large caches throughout the U.S. These caches receive requests from hundreds of other caches, all connected in a “global cache mesh.”Matthew Weaver has 10 years of experience in software development and system administration. He’s given many tutorials to technical audiences, and currently works with Nedernet Inc, a wireless ISP in the Rocky Mountains. He helped Nedernet see the value in using small form factor PCs for an array of devices, including remote outdoor access points and solar-powered servers. |

Solar Cell Technology and Applications $135.95 Energy experts predict that wholesale electricity prices could easily rise 35 to 65 percent by 2015. Add to this the growing need for energy independence and the need to reduce carbon emissions and it is very clear that the development of low-cost renewable energy, such as solar energy, is essential for our economy and our national security. With the potential for low-cost, renewable energy that can create jobs while reducing our dependency on foreign oil, solar cell technology provides a very attractive and plausible option. Presenting a well-balanced mix of theory and applications, Solar Cell Technology and Applications addresses critical design aspects representing cutting-edge solar cell technology. It offers complete coverage of the latest advances in the field, including low-cost, high-efficiency elements and the latest approaches in solar cell designs. The book discusses:Performance parameters and cost projections for cells and complete solar energy systemsImportant properties of the semiconductor and compound materials best suited for the fabrication of solar cellsTechniques for performance improvements in solar cells and panels—emphasizing cost, reliability, and longevity Integration of organic dye technology in the development of solar devicesMathematical expressions and their derivations—highlighting performance enhancement Using conventional nomenclature, a consistent set of symbols, and identical units for ease of comprehension, this time-saving resource supplies pioneering engineers, research scientists, professors, and students with the understanding needed to spark the advancements that must be made to maximize the economic and environmental benefits of this relatively untapped and abundant renewable energy resource. |

The Commercial Space Station $16.4 By 2016, the International Space Station will face retirement. What then? When colonizing space, NASA blazes the trails, but private industry must build the roads. For common citizens to inhabit space, there must be a station in near Earth orbit, only 400 miles high, where dedicated commercial activities can take place. It will be a hub of commerce where industrial scientists can perform chemistry and biology, tourist can have lavish vacations, solar power stations can be built and serviced, and where satellites can be tested and deployed. This is now within the grasp of several businesses that are determined to see this vision through. The commercialization of low Earth orbit can free NASA, and the other space agencies around the world, to colonize the Moon and Mars. In fact, these agencies will be some of the first customers on an industrial facility in space. The commercial space station can be the crucible from which a new economy in forged, where better medicines, cleaner energy sources, stronger materials, and wider human experiences can be realized. These space stations are being deployed now. They will do practical, useful things in space for the common good of taxpayers. They will be new tools in the fight to solve medical and environmental problems to come. And they will provide jobs and tax revenue. The 21st century will be an industrial space century where average citizens can participate as entrepreneurs or customers. |
